Tripping the night fantastic

Katrina Witham with wires | August 10, 2008

It was the night China demanded the world pay attention.

In an Olympic stadium unlike any before, in front of a crowd of 91,000, the athletes of 204 nations marched into Games history.

Among the last to appear were the 227 Australians prepared to march into Beijing’s heat and smog. The balance of the 433-strong team – many dressed in team uniform – watched the spectacular from the air-conditioned comfort of the Olympic village.

China’s most successful film director, Zhang Yimou – whose films include Raise The Red Lantern and House Of Flying Daggers – won wide praise for the artistic and historic aspects of the ceremony.

And his efforts, aided by the precision drumming of 2000 militia among a total of 15,000 performers, were helped by meteorologists who yesterday revealed they fired 1104 "rain dispersal rockets" into clouds over Beijing.

China’s media basked in the success of the ceremony, saying the extravaganza could be a turning point in world history.

The leading People’s Daily newspaper, the main mouthpiece of the ruling Communist Party, gushed: "As the resplendent Olympic flame lit up the night over the Bird’s Nest … the world not only saw a modern China that embraces a 5000-year-old ancient history, but a fully confident, strong and wise China.

"This rare night in Beijing will become an important page in the history of world civilisation."

For years, China’s state media have driven home the message that the Beijing Games would bring the world closer to China and help it finally realise its dream to stand amid the global powers.

The Beijing Times wrote: "The Beijing Olympic Games is a new starting point for human civilisation to move toward the future, now the expectation is for a more open China to make greater contributions to humanity.

"The pride of Beijing is that we have fulfilled the commitments made to the international community for a successful Beijing Games, we are also proud of Beijing because Beijing has not let down the expectations of 1.3 billion Chinese."

The First newspaper said that, after seven years of preparations and an Olympic torch relay that circled the world and ascended Mount Everest, "the 100-year Olympic dream is the dream of a strong China and as the dream of a strong nation is realised so is the dream of the Olympics".

In a rare note of discord, Australian Olympic legend Ron Clarke, 71, labelled the ceremony "too robotic" and extravagant.

Clarke, one of Australia’s most accomplished long-distance runners and now mayor of Gold Coast City Council, has attended 20 opening ceremonies since he lit the Olympic flame in Melbourne in 1956.

He said the spectacle was impressive but it lacked soul.

"It was an epic Ben-Hur production but it was just so precise, military precise, and as an Australian I like things to be more spontaneous.

"After the build-up I was a bit disappointed. It lacked heart and soul and was a bit too robotic."

Clarke suggested the International Olympic Committee should cap the budget for Olympic opening and closing ceremonies, with the savings put towards long-term endeavours.

"The Olympics is about participation. The money spent on such extravagant ceremonies could be used to support countries that can’t afford to send athletes to the Games," he said.

"It should be used for something that will have permanent value, rather than just shooting it up into the sky."Source: The Sun-Herald

Opening ceremony by the numbers

100 million – $US spent on the opening and closing ceremonies by Beijing officials.

15,000 – singers, musicians, dancers and other performers used during the three-hour spectacular.

5,000 – of whom were drawn from the Chinese Liberation Army.

1 – electric fan placed in each flag pole, thus circumventing the still conditions inside the Bird’s Nest.

29,000 – rounds of fireworks.

230 – Australian athletes who marched at the National Stadium from a squad of 433.

90,000 – spectators, the stadium’s capacity, attended the opening of the Games.

205 – nations attending the 29th Olympic games.

08/08/08 – the date chosen for the opening ceremony. Eight is considered a lucky number to the Chinese. The production began at 8.08 pm, local time.

4 billion – viewers worldwide who took in the ceremony.
